Muscat: The Central Bank of Oman (CBO) has outlined the procedures for exchanging damaged banknotes, reaffirming its commitment to facilitating currency circulation and serving the public.

In a statement, the CBO said it accepts torn, damaged and burnt banknotes from individuals and replaces them with valid currency, subject to specific conditions.

For burnt banknotes, applicants must provide an official report issued by the Royal Oman Police or the local Wali confirming the incident of fire, along with a valid identity card or resident card. The damaged banknotes must be submitted in person, and the applicant is required to be physically present.

For torn banknotes, the bank stipulates that the note must clearly show at least one complete serial number. Additionally, more than half of the banknote must be intact, with at least one full serial number visible.

The CBO added that in cases where banknotes do not meet the stated criteria, they may still be considered if accompanied by a letter from the Ministry of Social Development or the Wali, explaining the social circumstances of the holder and requesting replacement.
