IZKI: The Wilayat of Izki is enhancing its position as one of the most important historical centres in the Sultanate of Oman, relying on a rich architectural heritage embodied in its old quarters, most notably the Al Yaman and Al Nizar quarters, which represent a living example of the Omani life throughout the ages, said Sayyid Ashraf bin Ahmed al Busaidy, Wali of Izki.

Al Busaidy added that the old neighbourhoods are not merely traditional buildings, but rather living testaments to Omani history and a source of inspiration for future generations. He noted that the Wilayat of Ibri is working in close cooperation with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism and other relevant authorities to preserve this heritage asset.

He noted that heritage preservation efforts included surveying and documenting historical buildings, preparing technical and engineering studies to assess their condition, and adding a number of these sites to protection lists, while also raising community awareness of the importance of preserving architectural heritage. Initial phases of restoration have also commenced, as part of a phased plan aimed at revitalising the old quarters.

He added that they are striving to engage the local community in these efforts and that owners of old houses are encouraged to contribute to the restoration work by streamlining procedures and opening avenues for partnerships with investors, while preserving the traditional architecture that distinguishes these quarters.

He added that the Wilayat of Izki seeks to transform the old quarters into integrated tourist destinations based on the concept of a ‘living heritage village’. These destinations will include heritage guesthouses, traditional cafes, craft projects, and tourist tracks, in addition to organising cultural events that enhance the visitor experience and link them to local heritage.

He noted that the government offers a package of incentives for investors, especially young Omanis, including financial support, streamlined licensing procedures, and technical consultations. He added that revitalising the old quarters will contribute to stimulating economic activity in the wilayat.

He added that the challenges facing this project include multiple property ownerships, the need to develop infrastructure, and the high costs of restoration. Despite these challenges, work continues in coordination with relevant authorities to find practical and sustainable solutions based on partnership and phased implementation.

The wali of Izki stressed that the project to develop the old quarters aligns with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040, which seeks to diversify income sources and enhance the tourism sector. He noted that reviving this heritage represents an investment in national identity and a promising opportunity to build a sustainable economic future for the Wilayat of Izki.
