MUSCAT, APRIL 1
The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has issued a warning to those who visit the newly formed water ponds after recent rains and flash floods in various governorates, highlighting the hidden danger of drowning in these natural pools.
Due to the recent heavy rains, water ponds have emerged in valleys, plains and deserts across many governorates. Some of these pools cover large areas, attracting tourists and recreational visitors, especially on weekends.
Lt Col Mohammed bin Salam al Hashami, Director of Security Relations and Media at ROP, explained that swimming in valleys after rainfall is a popular activity among young people. However, the uneven surfaces of Oman's mountains and valleys create pools of varying depths, increasing the risk of drowning, especially when unsupervised.
“The varied topography of Oman’s mountains and valleys means that the valleys and their surfaces are uneven, contributing to the formation of pools of varying depths, even in the same location and it is crucial to be aware of the hidden dangers lurking behind these pools, dangers that are not readily apparent to the naked eye. This increases the risk of drowning, particularly when children and teenagers are not supervised and monitored,” Lt Col Al Hashami said.
He cautioned against swimming in dams, open wells and springs, which pose a greater danger of drowning compared to pools in valleys. He also warned of potential injuries from slipping on surfaces near pools or jumping from heights onto rocks.
Visitors to tourist sites are advised to take precautions, avoid driving into dangerous areas, choose safe locations, be aware of flash floods, avoid swimming in deep water and supervise children near water bodies.
Despite these warnings, some visitors continue to dive into natural pools formed after recent rains. Lt Col Al Hashami urged caution due to the unpredictable depths, hidden currents and silt that could pose risks to swimmers.
He emphasised that stagnant water may contain hazards such as deep holes, debris, or sudden flash floods. He expressed concern about the recurring drowning incidents that could have been prevented by following safety guidelines.
