US President Donald Trump said on Monday that Washington has made "great progress" in discussions to end the war with Iran, but threatened to destroy key Iranian infrastructure if a deal is not reached soon.

The US is "in serious discussions with A NEW, AND MORE REASONABLE,REGIME" to bring the military operation to an end, Trump wrote on hisTruth Social platform.

Trump hailed the progress made in talks, though Iran has repeatedly denied it is holding negotiations with Washington over an end to the war.

However, he said if a deal is not reached "shortly," the US will"conclude [its] lovely 'stay' in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinization plants!)"

He said these targets had so far been deliberately left untouched.

"This will be in retribution for our many soldiers, and others, that Iran has butchered and killed over the Regime's 47 year 'Reign of Terror'," Trump said.

Kharg Island is an Iranian territory in the Gulf, through which roughly 90% of the country's oil exports flow.
