MUSCAT: The National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre has confirmed that the Sultanate of Oman will continue to be affected by unstable weather conditions, with heavy thunderstorms expected through Friday.

According to the centre, the weather system will initially impact the governorates of Musandam, Al Buraimi, Al Batinah North, Al Dhahirah and Al Dakhiliyah, before gradually extending to include Muscat, Al Batinah South, Al Sharqiyah North, Al Sharqiyah South and Al Wusta.

The centre warned that rainfall will vary in intensity and may become very heavy at times, accompanied by hailstorms. These conditions are likely to cause flash floods in wadis and low-lying areas, with some valleys expected to experience torrential flows. Additionally, strong downdrafts with wind speeds ranging between 20 and 50 knots are anticipated.

The effects of the weather system are also expected to reach parts of Dhofar Governorate, where scattered rainfall, occasionally thundery, may occur.

The National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre urged citizens and residents to exercise caution during thunderstorms, avoid crossing flooded valleys, stay clear of low-lying areas, and refrain from going to sea during the warning period.

On Thursday, heavy rains continued in coastal and mountain villages and residential areas of Quriyat.

Yasser bin Saud al Zadjali, a member of the Muscat Governorate Municipal Council representing Quriyat, confirmed that the governorate, through officials on relevant government committees and members of the Muscat Governorate Municipal Council representing the governorate, immediately designated three schools as shelters following the initial reports from the Civil Aviation Authority regarding expected rainfall across the Sultanate of Oman.

He clarified that the roads in the Wilayat are passable and were not affected by the rain, and there are no traffic disruptions, except for the two unpaved mountain roads that would be repaired once the rain stops.
