MUSCAT: Amid unstable weather conditions affecting the Sultanate of Oman, the Royal Oman Police has intensified its public awareness campaigns across various media platforms, warning motorists against the dangers of crossing flowing wadis and stressing that reckless behaviour during such conditions could put lives and property at serious risk.

In a recent awareness post published on its official social media accounts, the police featured an illustrative image of a vehicle stranded in a fast-flowing wadi, highlighting the severe consequences of underestimating floodwaters. The message emphasised that flowing water alone is capable of lifting and sweeping away a vehicle, underscoring the power and unpredictability of flash floods even when water levels appear shallow.

The post also reiterated that Oman’s traffic law criminalises the deliberate crossing of wadis in a manner that endangers lives. Under Article 49, violators may face imprisonment for up to three months, a fine of up to RO 500, or both, depending on the severity of the offence.

This warning comes as several governorates across the Sultanate of Oman continue to experience varying levels of rainfall, resulting in active wadi flows and water accumulation in low-lying areas. Authorities have repeatedly urged the public to remain cautious, avoid flood-prone locations, and refrain from unnecessary risks.

The Royal Oman Police further emphasised that many incidents recorded during adverse weather conditions are often the result of ignoring official warnings. Some motorists attempt to cross flooded wadis out of overconfidence, assuming they can pass safely — an assumption that has led to serious and sometimes fatal consequences.

Road safety experts explain that the force of moving water cannot be accurately assessed by sight alone. Even shallow water can destabilise a vehicle, particularly when combined with strong currents or uneven terrain. In addition, floodwater may conceal hidden hazards such as debris or damaged road surfaces, increasing the likelihood of accidents.

Authorities have called on citizens and residents to stay updated with official weather bulletins and strictly follow safety instructions, avoiding travel unless necessary during severe conditions. Motorists are also advised to use alternative safe routes, ensure their vehicles are in good condition, and immediately stop if rising water levels or flooding are observed on roads.

The Royal Oman Police, in coordination with relevant authorities, continues to implement awareness campaigns aimed at strengthening public understanding of weather-related risks and promoting a culture of safety, particularly during seasonal weather fluctuations.

As the impact of the weather system continues, officials reiterate that safety is a shared responsibility — beginning with individual compliance and extending to community-wide awareness — to ensure the protection of lives and property across Oman.
