MUSCAT, MARCH 21
The Oman Olympic Museum, which was inaugurated in April 2025, stands as one of the Sultanate of Oman’s modern sporting landmarks, offering visitors an immersive journey into the values of the Olympic Movement and the rich history of Omani sport. Through a diverse collection of medals, sports equipment, digital displays and visual storytelling, the museum highlights key milestones that shaped Oman’s sporting identity on regional and international stages.
Speaking to Oman Observer, Ali bin Salim al Busafi, Acting Executive Director of the Oman Olympic Committee (OOC), outlined the five most important sections that every visitor should explore. “The museum experience will begin with the International Olympic Movement section, which traces the origins of the Olympic Games from ancient Greece to the modern era. The section highlights the core Olympic values while offering visitors a deeper understanding of the evolution of the Games,” he said.
“Visitors can also explore the Olympic Torch corner, featuring a global map that illustrates the journey of the Olympic flame and host cities up to 2024. The display includes Olympic and Asian torches linked to Oman’s participation in major international events,” he added.
OMAN'S OLYMPIC STORY
Another key highlight is the section dedicated to the history of the Olympic Movement in Oman. “This area documents the country’s early participation in regional and global competitions, reflecting the steady growth of Omani sport over the years. The museum also showcases Oman’s achievements as a host nation, featuring major events such as the Asian Beach Games 2010 and the GCC Beach Games 2025, which played a significant role in strengthening the country’s international sporting presence,” the OOC acting-director explained.
“Additional sections include a rich collection of memorabilia from the Oman Olympic Committee, along with a dedicated gallery highlighting the role of Omani women in sport and their contributions across various disciplines. The achievements section stands out as a tribute to Omani athletes, showcasing their main achievements at regional, continental and international levels, and reflecting the nation’s sporting progress,” he said.
“The museum tour will conclude with a cinema corner, where visitors can watch documentary films that present the history of sport and promote Olympic values in an engaging and inspiring way,” he added
FROM VISION TO REALITY
Al Busafi also shared insights into the development of the museum project, describing it as a continuation of earlier efforts to preserve Oman’s sporting heritage. “The project was reintroduced with a renewed and more comprehensive vision. It went through a complete redevelopment process, including reviewing and refining exhibits to better reflect key milestones in Oman’s sporting history,” he said.
“The project followed a structured approach, beginning with concept development and documentation, in coordination with key stakeholders such as the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth (MoCSY), sports associations and relevant institutions. Archival materials, historical items and valuable photographs were carefully selected to ensure authenticity,” he added.
“The team also engaged with prominent athletes and sports figures to enrich the museum with personal memorabilia, while drawing on international expertise. Collaboration with the Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, as well as coordination with the International Olympic Committee and the Olympic Museum Lausanne, ensured alignment with global standards. Modern display techniques and interactive content were introduced to enhance visitor engagement, culminating in a fully integrated museum experience,” he said.
Al Busafi concluded his remarks by inviting everyone including the public, educational institutions, to visit Oman Olympic Museum which will offer a unique opportunity to explore the nation’s sporting legacy and inspire future generations through the enduring values of sport.
