MUSCAT: Promises carry power. They are made to family, to friends and to oneself — and keeping them reflects who we are.
Now, residents and citizens in Oman are being invited to make a promise that can help a child in crisis survive, heal and grow.
In line with Oman’s national child policy of ensuring a safe, healthy and nurturing childhood, Unicef Oman has launched a unique community initiative at Al Mouj Muscat, encouraging people to pledge their commitment to protecting children.
The campaign, titled ‘Wahd’ (Promise), began last Wednesday and features a large interactive wall where visitors can write personal pledges dedicated to the well-being and rights of children.
This is the first public promise wall of-its-kind in Oman. The whiteboard installation, measuring 5 x 2 metres, will remain at Al Mouj until March 31 and has already attracted hundreds of participants since being set up along the busy walkway.
“The idea goes beyond writing a simple note. It is not only a promise but a commitment that one makes — and a promise that should not be broken,” said Sara al Lamki, Partnerships and Communications Officer at Unicef Oman.
She explained that the message behind the initiative is simple: to stand with children.
“All children have the right to safety and education, especially in the times we live in today. We want children to grow without being affected by conflicts and to always have the right to security, health and education,” she said.
After March 31, the team plans to move the wall to other public indoor spaces to allow more people to participate in the initiative.
The campaign highlights the urgent needs of children facing humanitarian crises around the world. Conflict, displacement and economic hardship continue to threaten their lives and futures, making initiatives that raise awareness and support especially important.
Visitors are invited to write short but meaningful promises reflecting their commitment to children’s safety, education and well-being. The campaign also includes a digital version of the wall, allowing people to share their pledges online and expand the reach of the message.
Participants receive a Promise bracelet, which they can wear as a reminder of their pledge or share with loved ones as a symbol of hope for children’s futures.
People are also encouraged to record a short video wearing the bracelet and share it online by tagging @unicef_oman, inspiring others to join the movement and make a lasting difference for children everywhere.
