MUSCAT: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources reported that Oman imported a total of 285,890 live animals from January 1 to March 5 to meet rising demand for red meat as Eid al Fitr approaches.
Imports included 27,718 heads of cattle and 258,172 sheep and goats, while local production and chilled or frozen meat also contribute to fulfilling market needs.
Statistical data revealed a significant increase compared to last year: sheep and goat imports rose from 141,008 heads in January 2025 to 156,419 heads in January 2026, and cattle imports increased from 7,725 to 11,098 heads over the same period, reflecting stronger market demand.
The ministry emphasised its commitment to ensuring a steady supply, coordinating with livestock import companies, and facilitating import operations by simplifying procedures and expediting quarantine transactions.
During this period, 239 livestock import permits were approved to maintain abundant supplies and stable food availability across Oman’s governorates.
Authorities continue to monitor market movements and collaborate with relevant entities to ensure sustainable food supplies for consumers, particularly during periods of heightened demand. — ONA
