MUSCAT: In response to the evolving developments witnessed across the region and their potential economic implications on markets and consumer behaviour, the Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) has warned against sudden price increases of goods or services without prior official approval from the competent authorities.

In a recent advisory, CPA emphasised that exploiting exceptional circumstances to impose unjustified price hikes is a clear violation of the Consumer Protection Law and its executive regulations. Violators will face legal accountability. CPA stated that it is closely monitoring market conditions across all governorates through field inspection teams.

These teams are responsible for tracking price movements and ensuring compliance with approved pricing structures. Any adjustments to the prices of essential commodities or services must follow established legal procedures and receive prior authorisation before implementation. Supporting documentation must be available for review by inspectors upon request.

The advisory comes at a time when local markets are experiencing increased activity in food supplies, daily consumer goods and various service sectors. The Authority noted that some may be tempted to seek quick gains at the expense of consumers. However, CPA made it clear that penalties stipulated by law, including financial fines, temporary closure of establishments and referral to the Public Prosecution, will be enforced against violators in serious cases.

Communication channels remain available around the clock for consumers to submit complaints or reports via the toll-free hotline 80077997, through the CPA’s electronic application, or by visiting its branches across the Sultanate of Oman.

CPA also called on small and medium enterprises to act responsibly and avoid reacting to rumors or unverified expectations that may prompt premature price increases in anticipation of potential future costs. It noted that any legitimate changes in import or production expenses can be reviewed through official channels to ensure a fair balance between the interests of businesses and the rights of consumers.

Furthermore, the CPA stressed the importance of clearly displaying prices on all goods offered for sale, enabling consumers to make informed purchasing decisions. Failure to display prices or manipulating them at the point of sale constitutes a violation subject to legal action. Transparency in commercial transactions, it stated, is a fundamental pillar in protecting the market from disorder or exploitation.

The Authority underscored that consumer awareness plays a pivotal role in maintaining market discipline, as timely reporting of violations facilitates swift action. In this regard, the CPA urged members of the public not to hesitate in reporting any unjustified price increases or suspicious practices.
