GENEVA: Oman has reaffirmed its commitment to engaging positively and constructively with the mechanisms of the United Nations Human Rights Council and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, renewing its pledge to continue this approach in line with its firm convictions and the principles enshrined in the Basic Law of the State.
The statement was delivered by First Secretary Sarah bint Abdullah al Balushi of the Permanent Mission of Oman to the United Nations and International Organizations in Geneva, at the conclusion of the high-level segment of the Council’s sixty-first session, during the general debate.
Oman stated that the review of its national report under the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism reflected its constructive engagement with the Council’s processes, enhancing national efforts to protect, preserve and consolidate human rights.
Al Balushi noted that the United Nations system is currently facing a sensitive situation due to a funding crisis affecting its ability to carry out its mandates.
This comes amid a decline in multilateral diplomacy, with some initiatives increasingly formulated and managed outside the UN framework — a trend that may weaken the effectiveness of collective international action.
She emphasised the importance of enabling international institutions to fulfil their mandates, activating their decisions and strengthening confidence in their effectiveness and efficiency to uphold the principles of justice and the rule of law.
The statement further highlighted that global developmental imbalances are among the principal drivers of conflicts, wars and human rights violations, and constitute major obstacles to the promotion and protection of human rights. It also pointed to the decline in dialogue between nations and peoples as a contributing factor to instability.
Oman reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening dialogue, promoting stability, supporting regional and international cooperation, and resolving conflicts through peaceful means.
It highlighted its role as a trusted mediator that fosters conducive environments for serious dialogue and reinforces confidence in sustainable peace processes, contributing to security, stability and prosperity in the Middle East and beyond. — ONA
