MUSCAT, FEB 23

Speeding, fatigue and rash driving are the three major reasons behind the majority of the accidents during the holy month of Ramadhan and one needs to exercise caution while driving, reminds the Royal Oman Police (ROP).

Accidents during the first few days of the holy month are high and it has been found that a large number of accidents reported during the holy month are said to be due to lack of attention in driving due to heat, coupled with sleep deprivation, which can result in loss of attention.

People tend to speed especially in the evenings close to breaking fasting. “It is better to arrive late for Iftar than never and remember there are your dear and near ones awaiting your safe arrival with a smiling face,“ an ROP official said.

Speaking to the Observer, the officer said that one should get enough rest before hitting the road, especially on a long route.

“Pay extra caution on the road and always follow defensive driving, hoping that the other person on the road might err and cause an accident. Also, one shouldn't continue to drive if he/she is fatigued while driving," he said.

According to statistics, the casualty rate in Ramadhan was found to be 1.5 per cent and that in non-Ramadhan months was 1.2 per cent.

Here are ROP's guidelines for safe driving during the holy month:

1. Avoid texting and using mobiles while driving.

2. Speed thrills but kills.

3. If you're walking, use a pedestrian crossing.

“Safety on the road is a shared responsibility, and everyone should focus on the safety of oneself as well as the lives of others while on the road, whether driving, walking, or pillion-riding with a friend. It really pays off to protect yourself and others from accidents, as the cost of accidents is too high sometimes,” he said.
