SHINAS: Construction has commenced on a major white-leg shrimp aquaculture project in Shinas, North Al Batinah Governorate, marking a significant step in the Sultanate’s efforts to strengthen food security and diversify non-oil economic activity in Oman.
The RO 23.5 million development spans approximately 15 hectares and is designed to produce up to 7,500 tonnes of shrimp annually, positioning it among the largest aquaculture ventures in the country. Officials say the project aligns with national diversification strategies aimed at expanding investment in agriculture, fisheries, and food production while enhancing domestic supply capacity.
Beyond boosting seafood output, the project is expected to stimulate the local economy by generating both direct and indirect employment opportunities. Jobs will be created in farm operations, logistics, processing, maintenance, and supply chain services, with a particular focus on providing employment opportunities for Omani youth.
Developers also emphasise the project’s technological dimension, noting that the facility will introduce advanced aquaculture techniques and modern production systems that can support knowledge transfer and workforce skills development. Training programmes linked to farm operations are expected to improve local expertise in shrimp cultivation, water management, and sustainable aquaculture practices.
Once operational, the project is anticipated to contribute to strengthening Oman’s seafood export potential while supporting domestic consumption. It also reflects growing investment momentum in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors, which are increasingly viewed as key pillars for long-term economic diversification and rural development.
