Nestled among towering peaks in Nakhal, North Al Batinah, Al Faiq Village remains one of Oman’s most enchanting yet largely undiscovered treasures.
Rich in natural beauty and historical character, the mountain settlement presents a rare blend of tranquility, heritage, and authenticity.
Photographer Ahmed Aljabri, who recently documented the village, recalls being struck by its profound sense of calm from the moment he arrived.
“The quiet harmony between nature and traditional architecture makes the place feel untouched by the fast pace of modern life,” he says, explaining that his visit was driven purely by a spirit of exploration.
The journey to Al Faiq unfolds through dramatic mountain landscapes, where rugged rock formations give way to unexpected greenery and traditional stone houses. Hidden between rocky peaks, the village reveals a breathtaking panorama that surprises visitors with its lush fields and timeless charm. For Aljabri, the experience raised an important question: how has a place of such beauty remained unknown to so many?
Reaching the village currently requires navigating an unpaved dirt road stretching nearly 10 kilometres. While the rough track adds a sense of adventure, Aljabri believes improved infrastructure would make the destination more accessible without compromising its natural character.
Among the village’s most striking features are its agricultural terraces, historic fortress, traditional homes, and ancient aflaj irrigation systems — living testaments to the ingenuity of generations who adapted to life in the mountains.
Together, these elements create what Aljabri describes as a “living museum,” reflecting a community deeply rooted in sustainability and cultural preservation.
Agriculture remains central to daily life in Al Faiq, with residents maintaining a strong bond with the land. Equally memorable, Aljabri notes, is the hospitality of the villagers. Their warmth and openness towards visitors add a human dimension that enhances the village’s appeal.
With thoughtful planning, strategic infrastructure development, and careful preservation, Al Faiq holds significant promise as a destination for eco-tourism and heritage tourism.
