MUSCAT: Chromium ore production in the Sultanate of Oman reached 353,538 tonnes in 2025, with sales climbing to 387,995 tonnes and total revenues exceeding RO 15 million, underscoring the mineral’s growing contribution to economic diversification.

The Ministry of Energy and Minerals said it continues to regulate chromium exploitation through clearly defined concession allocations and licensing frameworks designed to ensure efficient resource use and long-term sustainability. The approach aligns with Oman Vision 2040 objective of maximising local added value and strengthening downstream industries.

Engineer Saud bin Khamis al Mahrouqi, Director General of Minerals, highlighted ongoing efforts to expand exploration and improve product quality, while managing exports through a dedicated metals trading company to enhance value realisation and reinforce Oman’s position as a regional hub.

Most output is exported via Omani ports to markets in Asia and Europe. Authorities are also encouraging investment in ferrochrome smelting and related manufacturing to reduce raw material exports and deepen industrial linkages.

Oman’s chromium deposits are associated with the globally significant ophiolite belt stretching across the Al Hajar Mountains, from Shinas to Wadi Bani Khalid. Currently, 29 licensed quarries operate under regulatory oversight.

Chromium remains strategically important due to its essential role in stainless steel, ferroalloys, refractories and specialised chemicals. By strengthening governance, promoting exploration and supporting downstream processing, the Ministry aims to enhance competitiveness, attract investment and secure sustainable returns from one of the Sultanate of Oman’s key mineral resources. — ONA
