MUSCAT: Mohammed al Yahmadi, Executive Director of the Oman Football Association (OFA) confirmed that the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology from the second round of the Jindal League represents a strategic step towards enhancing refereeing standards and preparing Omani referees for participation in top international football events.
Speaking to Oman Observer, Al Yahmadi said the decision reflects OFA’s continued commitment to promoting fairness, transparency and professionalism in domestic competitions, while simultaneously developing the technical capabilities of local match officials.
“The implementation of VAR technology from the second round of the Jindal League aims to provide our referees with valuable practical experience in using modern officiating tools, which have become an essential requirement in elite football competitions worldwide,” Al Yahmadi said.
He confirmed that the OFA has signed an agreement on Wednesday with Ashtar International Company to supply and operate the VAR system, noting that the partnership was finalised ahead of the highly anticipated HM Cup final which is scheduled to take place on February 14 at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex.
“Ashtar International has proven expertise in delivering VAR solutions and will provide the full technical setup required to ensure the system is applied according to international standards,” he added.
Al Yahmadi emphasised that gaining hands-on experience with VAR is now a key criterion for referees aspiring to officiate at continental and global tournaments. “Implementing VAR in the remaining matches of the top-flight league this season will significantly enhance our referees’ exposure and readiness. Today, VAR experience is no longer optional as it is a fundamental requirement for referees at the highest level,” he said.
Beyond VAR implementation, Al Yahmadi highlighted OFA’s broader efforts to support and develop match officials across all levels. The association intensified its focus on referee education through regular training programmes, workshops and certification courses.
“ OFA is keen to provide all necessary support to referees, from introductory courses for new officials to advanced workshops for experienced referees. These initiatives are essential to raising officiating standards and ensuring consistent decision-making across competitions,” he said.
