Tax Authority unveils VAT refund plan for tourists

Muscat: The government will implement the Value Added Tax (VAT) refund service for tourists after reaching an agreement with the companies providing these services on the applicable costs and percentages, the Head of the Tax Authority has said.

The announcement was made during the first media briefing organised by the Tax Authority, which reviewed key developments, performance indicators and future plans of the tax system.

Meanwhile, the Director-General of Operations and Tax Services at the Tax Authority said that the number of income tax registrants rose by 88 per cent, VAT registrants by 120 per cent, and excise tax registrants by 222 per cent in 2025, compared to 2021.

He explained that tax revenues in 2025 amounted to RO 658 million from income tax, RO 631 million from VAT, and RO 84 million from excise tax.

The Director-General noted that the authority is working to implement advanced systems, including electronic invoicing, the “Ta'akad ” application, a tax risk management system, and the use of artificial intelligence technologies to enhance efficiency and compliance.

He further pointed out that the Tax Authority has signed approximately 39 effective agreements to avoid double taxation up to 2025.
