Veteran rock legend Neil Young has given Greenland residents free access to his catalogue, saying he hoped the gesture offered stress relief to people unsettled by threats from US President Donald Trump. The announcement framed the move as a symbolic act of solidarity rather than a commercial promotion and it was shared with fans through Young’s official website and channels.
“This is an offer of peace and love”, the dual US-Canadian musician wrote, using language that echoed themes long associated with his music and public persona. Young explained that the decision was motivated by concern for everyday people rather than political point-scoring or publicity.
“I hope my music and music films will ease some of the unwanted stress and threats you are experiencing from our unpopular and hopefully temporary government”, Young added, directly addressing residents of Greenland and acknowledging the anxiety caused by recent political rhetoric. His message struck a supportive tone, positioning music as a source of comfort.
The comments followed a period of tension sparked by Trump’s remarks about taking Greenland, a mineral-rich autonomous territory that is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. After strong pushback from European leaders and officials, Trump later backed down from the idea, but the episode drew attention and criticism.
Young said that “all the music I have made during the last 62 years is yours to hear”, emphasising the scale and openness of the offer. The gesture covers his full body of work, including albums and music films spanning more than six decades.
Access is granted to anyone with a cellphone number using Greenland’s country code, making the offer straightforward and available. Young noted that the access is renewable and will remain valid “as long as you are in Greenland”, reinforcing the connection to place rather than nationality.
Young has long been a vocal critic of Trump and his policies. When Trump was elected to his first term in 2016, Young released the song “Already Great”, a response to the “Make America Great Again” slogan that underscored his opposition and activism continued.
