Inter Miami signed Mexican national team forward German Berterame to a designated player contract through the 2028-29 season Friday.
Berterame, who had played for Mexican power Monterrey since 2022, will have an extension option in his contract for the 2029-2030 campaign.
Berterame amassed 68 goals and 15 assists in 153 matches across all competitions for Monterrey. He also became a naturalized citizen after being born in Argentina, and he could be chosen to play for Mexico at this summer's World Cup after scoring two goals in eight caps.
"When I renewed my contract (with Monterrey), I told (club sporting director Hector Lara), ‘I'm not leaving unless something really eye-catching comes along.' I was obviously talking about teams from Europe. And I also said, ‘Unless, obviously, Messi comes and takes me with him.' So that anecdote stuck."
That, of course, referred to superstar Lionel Messi, the two-time reigning Major League Soccer MVP who is entering his third full season with Inter Miami.
