Muscat: The Ministry of Health has issued guidance on the safe and responsible use of weight loss medications, stressing that such treatments should only be taken under medical supervision and as part of a comprehensive health plan.

According to the ministry, weight loss medications are among the medical options used to help individuals suffering from obesity or excessive weight gain. These medications work through different mechanisms, including reducing appetite, increasing the feeling of fullness and limiting fat absorption.

The ministry emphasised that achieving the desired health benefits safely requires adherence to several essential steps. These include consulting a specialised physician, discussing the patient’s medical history and following the prescribed treatment plan.

The guidelines also highlight the importance of regular blood sugar monitoring, maintaining a balanced and healthy diet, and engaging in consistent physical activity while using such medications.

In addition, patients are advised to follow proper storage instructions for medicines, avoid sharing medications with others and immediately consult a doctor if any side effects appear.

The Ministry of Health warned against using weight loss medications without medical supervision, noting that only a qualified physician can determine the most appropriate treatment for each individual.
