MUSCAT: The right to a fair and free trial is the fundamental right of every individual, regardless of their differences, as stated by the Omani Basic Law, according to the Omani Lawyers Association (OLA).

This was emphasised during a workshop organised by the OLA to educate the general public on the principles and structure of a fair trial. The workshop featured Dr Mohamed Bahaa El Din Abu Shaqqa, a Professor of Criminal Law and a lawyer before the Court of Cassation.

Entitled ‘The Foundations and Guarantees of a Fair Trial’, and held in collaboration with the Institute of Law for Legal Training, this specialised legal event is part of the Association's ongoing efforts to elevate the legal profession, raise awareness of legal rights and guarantees, and uphold the principles of justice and the rule of law.

Dr Shaqqa's lecture covered the legal foundations and essential guarantees of a fair trial, focusing on practical and applied aspects to enhance legal knowledge and stimulate professional discussions among participants.

The event also aimed to address the significant challenges related to trial procedures, increase legal awareness among legal professionals, and promote a culture of justice, in alignment with the national goals in the Sultanate of Oman to establish a state of institutions and the rule of law.

Speaking to the Observer, Dr Hamad bin Hamdan al Rubaie, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Omani Lawyers Association, stated that this event reflects the Association's dedication to offering high-quality programmes that enhance the skills of lawyers and legal practitioners, deepen their understanding of the fundamental guarantees of a fair trial, and keep them updated on legislative and judicial developments.

Turki bin Said al Maamari, Member of the Board of Directors of the OLA and Head of the Public Relations and Media Committee, explained that this event is part of the committee's plan to showcase the Association's scientific and professional activities. He added that the Association is committed to delivering its media message in a professional manner that reflects its status and role in promoting legal awareness and societal understanding of the importance of justice and its guarantees.
