MUSCAT: The Royal Hospital succeeded in localising molecular tests for colorectal cancer (KRAS, NRAS, BRAF) as part of efforts made by the hospital’s Department of Medical Laboratories, Section of Tissues and Cells.

The tests will be conducted for the first time in the Sultanate of Oman within a period of just one working day. Earlier, the tests were carried out abroad with a waiting time of more than three weeks.

The accomplishment represents a milestone in the field of tumour diagnosis. Besides the acceleration of target treatments, the tests augment the efficiency of decision-making and improve the quality of healthcare provided to cancer patients.

The progress is in pursuance of efforts undertaken by the Ministry of Health to develop specialised diagnostic services and promote precision medicine in line with the goals of Oman Vision 2040, which focuses on localising advanced medical technologies and establishing a sustainable health system based on innovation.

Dr Mohammed al Masqari, Head of the Section of Tissues and Cells at the Royal Hospital's Department of Medical Laboratories, said, “Localising molecular tests constitutes a strategic step in supporting the system of cancer treatment. The prompt results of the tests will offer physicians an opportunity to make accurate treatment decisions in a timely manner and contribute to improved patient well-being.”

Al Masqari added that this achievement reflects the preparedness of medical laboratories and the efficiency of the national staff. He affirmed the readiness of specialists to introduce more advanced tests that keep pace with the highest international standards. - ONA
