Muscat: Oman experienced a significant drop in temperatures over the past 24 hours, with Jebel Shams recording the lowest temperature in the country at minus 0.1 degrees Celsius, according to data released by the Civil Aviation Authority.

The sub-zero reading was registered on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, highlighting the intensity of the cold wave currently affecting parts of the Sultanate, particularly elevated areas. Jebel Shams, the country’s highest peak, frequently records the lowest temperatures during winter months, but readings below zero remain relatively rare.

Other regions also reported notably low temperatures during the same period. Saiq recorded 4.8°C, while Yanqul saw temperatures drop to 9.5°C. In Nizwa, the mercury dipped to 11.5°C, with similar readings reported in Fahud and Muqshin at 11.5°C and 11.3°C respectively. Haima recorded 11.0°C, while As Sunainah stood at 11.6°C.

Further inland, Bahla recorded a minimum temperature of 12.3°C, followed by Um Al Zamaim and Dhank, both registering 12.4°C. The widespread drop in temperatures reflects the continued influence of northerly winds and stable atmospheric conditions across the region.
