MUSCAT, JAN 11
The Muttrah Athlete Development Centre team was crowned champions of the Muscat Nights 3x3 Basketball Championship for youth development centres, following an impressive performance in the tournament that concluded at Seeb Beach as part of the Muscat Nights sports programme. The event, held from January 9-10, featured a high technical standard and intense competition among elite centre players, with 32 athletes divided into eight teams.
The championship delivered a series of strong and closely contested matches, with each team playing three games in the group stage, while the qualified teams contested five matches in the knockout rounds, creating a competitive environment that allowed players to showcase their individual and team abilities.
Muttrah claimed the title through the efforts of Wail al Busaidy, Mohammed al Kharousi, Abdulrahman Shamas and Omar al Busaidy. Muscat finished second, represented by Murshid Bousalasal, Mohammed al Ajmi, Saeed al Wahaibi and Omar al Rashdi, while Bausher secured third place through Mohammed al Fahdi, Moataz al Rashidi, Abdullah al Ameri and Ahmed al Ghadani.
INSPIRING ATMOSPHERE
Alaa al Hadhrami, Chairman of the 3x3 Basketball Committee at the Oman Basketball Association, said that hosting the tournament within the Muscat Nights festival and in front of a diverse crowd provided strong motivation for the players and attracted the attention of visitors, helping to promote 3x3 basketball, expand its player base, and connect the sport with the wider community in an open and engaging environment.
He added that the event offered players a valuable competitive experience outside their daily training routines, allowing coaches to assess their abilities in real match conditions. He noted that this was the first 3x3 competition for most of the participants, making it an important starting point for future involvement in similar tournaments. Such championships, he stressed, also open the door for players to consider specialising in 3x3 basketball, supporting the long-term development plans of the sport in Oman.
Meanwhile, head coach Abdullah Hashim highlighted the importance of the tournament in revealing players’ individual abilities, particularly in ball control, quick decision-making and playing under pressure. He added that several players showed promising levels, while many others will benefit from further work on basic skills and team-play concepts.
