Muscat, Jan 8

The Environment Authority on Thursday held a media conference to present the environmental yield of the most consequential projects, initiatives and performance indicators for the Sultanate of Oman. The review detailed the accomplishments secured throughout the Tenth Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), underscoring the nation’s steadfast commitment to environmental stewardship and the advancement of sustainability.

The Authority illuminated the Sultanate of Oman's remarkable progress on the global stage, achieving a historic ascent of 94 positions in the Environmental Performance Index to attain 55th rank worldwide and second place regionally within both the Gulf and the Arab world. This distinguished achievement was further crowned with the Arab Excellence Award, bestowed in recognition of the Authority’s pioneering endeavours in sustainability and environmental guardianship.

The environmental report reviewed the statistics of the Authority's projects and initiatives within the framework of the Tenth Five-Year Plan (2021-2025). The Environment Authority in the Sultanate of Oman achieved several important accomplishments that reflect its commitment to environmental protection and promoting sustainability. 589 environmental projects were implemented during the past five years, including a number of environmental initiatives that contribute to achieving sustainable development.

Continuing its efforts to preserve the environment and enhance nature reserves, 32 nature reserves were declared in the Sultanate of Oman by 2025. These reserves include 13 terrestrial reserves, 13 marine reserves, and 13 combined terrestrial and marine reserves, bringing the total protected area to 17,839.57 km², representing 5.76% of Oman's total area. This achievement reflects the significant efforts made by the Authority to protect the terrestrial and marine environment in Oman.

EA declared a 100-per cent commitment to digital transformation and attained 91% overall performance during the Tenth Five-Year Plan. More than 10.8 million trees were planted as part of the National Initiative for Vegetation Development.

Oman ranks second in the Gulf and Arab world in the Environmental Performance Index and first globally in controlling carbon dioxide.

OCEC WINS 'ROZNA' GREEN CERTIFICATION

The Environment Authority has launched the Rozna Green Certification as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and establish green building principles in the Sultanate of Oman.

The first certificate in the Rozna Green Certification System was announced and awarded to the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre after meeting the evaluation requirements and Rozna standards as the first pilot building compliant with the standards in the projects category.

The Green Certification System is a national framework aimed at evaluating and classifying projects and facilities according to approved environmental standards. This contributes to raising the efficiency of natural resource use, reducing environmental impact and improving the quality of the built environment.

The first accreditation certificate as an approved auditing body in the Rozna Green System was also announced and awarded to the office of Renardet SA & Partners Engineering Consultants LLC in recognition of their accreditation as the first auditing body licensed by the Environment Authority to conduct assessments of the Rozna Green Certification standards in the projects category.

Rozna is the national system for assessing green buildings, representing one of the cornerstones of the green certification system. It assesses buildings and facilities — existing, under construction, or planned — according to a set of criteria including energy and water efficiency, use of sustainable materials, indoor environmental quality, waste management, and innovation in design and operation.
