

MUSCAT: The latest statistical report released by the National Cancer Registry indicated a significant increase in cancer rates in the Sultanate of Oman, posing a major challenge to public health.
The report indicates that 2,510 cases were registered in the Sultanate of Oman in 2021, up from the figure of 2,198 registered a year earlier.
The number of registered cases among Omanis reached 2,318, representing 92 per cent of the total cases with males accounting for 994 cases (42.9 per cent) and females 1,324 cases (57.1 per cent).
Among non-Omanis, 163 cases were recorded (6 per cent). Additionally, 29 cases of latent cancer were detected among Omanis (1.15 per cent).
Additionally, 155 cases were reported among children aged 14 years and under. The Ministry of Health, represented by the National Cancer Registry, on Tuesday released its periodic report on cancer incidence rates for 2021 in the Sultanate of Oman. The report indicated that the average age at diagnosis for females was lower than for males, at 47 years for females compared to 58 years for males. The report also showed that the incidence rate among females in the Sultanate of Oman was 129.4, compared to 117.2 for males, bringing the overall incidence rate to 122.2.
Crude incidence rate among females was 95.1, while among males it was 70.4, with a crude incidence rate of 82.7.
The National Cancer Registry’s report showed that breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among females in the Sultanate of Oman, with 393 cases, followed by thyroid cancer with 196 cases, colorectal cancer with 93 cases, Hodgkin lymphoma with 66 cases and brain cancer with 64 cases.
The most common types among males are colorectal cancer with 121 cases, followed by Hodgenmous lymphoma with 79 cases, prostate cancer with 77 cases, thyroid cancer with 66 cases and leukemia with 65 cases.
