MUSCAT: The Sultan Qaboos University Council held its first meeting of the 2025-2026 academic year on Thursday to review developments across the university and assess the implementation of previous decisions and recommendations.

During the meeting, the council approved the university’s academic appointment regulations for both Omani and non-Omani staff, alongside an updated academic promotion policy.

The faculty system document was also ratified, establishing clear scientific criteria for promoting researchers, including research output and community service. In addition, the council approved the launch of the Master of Science programme in Genetic Counselling at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences.

The council further approved the merger of the 'Self-Learning Centre' and the 'Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning' into the newly formed 'Centre of Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Future Skills'. It also sanctioned the restructuring and renaming of the Childcare Centre as the "Early Childhood Education Unit". The university’s overarching policy framework for organising policies, regulations and procedures was reviewed to enhance ongoing quality improvement initiatives.
