Muscat: The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism is lending support to citizens’ initiatives to restore historical buildings and sites in different governorates of the Sultanate of Oman.

The move encourages local community’s engagement in protecting and reviving the traditional architectural heritage in villages and sites.

The ministry explained that, during 2024, it provided support for 22 heritage projects in different wilayats of the Sultanate of Oman. The projects included the restoration of boundary walls, old houses, forts, defence towers, ancient mosques and majlis (public halls).

The restoration initiatives’ support programme continued to receive applications this year (2025).

This coincided with the implementation of restoration projects that are underway in the governorates of Al Sharqiyah South, Al Batinah North and Al Batinah South.

The projects are part of the ministry’s approach to revive heritage sites and enhance their presence in the tourism and cultural scene in a manner that contributes to providing a rich experience for visitors and tourists, strengthening the local community’s attachment to its ancient heritage and supporting local sustainable development. — ONA
