MUSCAT: Oman has stepped up efforts to build a sustainable transport ecosystem, with the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MoTCIT) executing a series of low-carbon mobility initiatives, including electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure expansion, green fuel development and maritime emissions reduction projects. These initiatives form part of Oman’s broader strategy to position itself as a regional leader in green logistics and clean technology.
EV infrastructure has seen notable progress, with more than 160 public and private charging stations installed across governorates as of the third quarter of 2025. The Ministry also launched “Shahin”, the national EV charging application, allowing users to locate charging stations, check availability and complete payments digitally. The expansion of EV facilities is in line with the growing adoption of electric vehicles and Oman’s ambition to create a sustainable urban mobility system.
A landmark moment came with the commissioning of the country’s first hydrogen production, supply and distribution station in early 2025, developed in partnership with Shell Oman.
It is the first such station in the Middle East and supports the deployment of hydrogen-powered mobility. The first fleet of 15 light hydrogen vehicles is already operational, marking the beginning of hydrogen transport adoption. Further innovation includes the development of a dual-combustion truck running on both diesel and hydrogen — designed and operated entirely by Omani experts — and recipient of the Excellence and Innovation Award at the 26th Gulf Engineering Forum.
In the maritime domain, the Ministry is pushing ahead with wider decarbonisation measures. A concession agreement has been signed to establish the first green ship recycling facility in Khatmat Malaha, designed to meet global environmental and safety standards. SOHAR Port and Freezone has implemented a cold ironing project, providing shore-side electricity to vessels and thereby reducing emissions produced while ships are berthed. The Ministry has also signed an MoU with private-sector partners to establish Oman’s first integrated green methanol production facility, which will supply clean fuel to ships and accelerate decarbonisation in maritime transport.
These initiatives support Oman’s role in the international clean energy transition while contributing to domestic sustainability objectives. The focus on hydrogen mobility, EV infrastructure, green methanol, ship electrification and recycling capabilities reflects a coordinated strategy to reduce emissions from land and sea transport.
By advancing green transport solutions and fuel innovation, Oman is working to deliver a modern, low-carbon logistics environment that strengthens the country’s global competitiveness and supports long-term environmental goals. — ONA
