The Wilayat of Bidiyah in Al Sharqiyah North Governorate is witnessing a vibrant surge in tourist activity as its winter tourism season, which began in October, continues through the end of March. The destination has become a major draw for both domestic and international visitors eager to experience its pleasant climate, desert adventures, and array of seasonal events, particularly on weekends.
Zubaida bint Salim al Shaithaniyah, official spokesperson for the Al Sharqiyah North Governorate, says that Bidiyah and neighbouring wilayats are experiencing strong tourism movement this year. “Visitors and families from across Oman and abroad converge on Bidiyah to enjoy its unique offerings during this distinctive winter season,” she said.
She added that the influx of tourists has significantly boosted the local economy and revitalised commercial activity. Popular attractions include desert camping, dune trekking, stargazing, paragliding, sand biking, and sandboarding.
Zubaida al Shaithani noted that preparations for the season are coordinated by multiple government bodies and committees under the supervision of the Al Sharqiyah North Governor’s Office and the Bidiyah Wali’s Office, ensuring well-organised events and seamless visitor experiences throughout the six-month period.
Among the season’s major highlights is the Bidiyah Car Challenge Carnival 2025, running from November 19 to 29, organised by the Bidiyah Car Racing Club in celebration of Oman’s National Day. Another anticipated event is the 11th Oman Desert Marathon, scheduled from January 2026, recognised internationally by SheRACES. The marathon offers global participants a thrilling adventure through Oman’s golden dunes and a chance to experience its famed hospitality.
Other events include the ‘Ardhah Camel Races, featuring 22 rounds and stages across various tracks, alongside poetry and music evenings, cultural programs, and social activities spread throughout the season.
The Al Sharqiyah North Governorate is well-equipped to handle the growing influx of tourists, with over 50 licensed hotel establishments offering more than 1,100 rooms, as well as 44 travel offices and 38 tour operators accredited by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MoHT). - ONA
