MUSCAT: The 2025 Asian & Oceanian Optimist Championship, organised by Oman Sail in collaboration with the Oman Marine Sports Committee and the International Optimist Dinghy Association (IODA), continued this week off the coast of Al Musannah with ideal sailing conditions and fierce competition among young sailors from across Asia and Oceania.
The opening day on Monday saw perfect weather and steady winds that helped ensure a smooth start to the qualifying series. Sailors were divided into three colour-coded groups red, yellow and blue, to compete in four races each, setting the stage for the decisive rounds ahead.
On the second day, sailors returned to the water for two additional qualification races marked by tactical duels and impressive displays of skill and focus. The level of competition intensified as participants aimed to secure a place in the elite Gold Fleet.
The momentum carried into Wednesday, which hosted the final qualifying races. At the end of the day, three Omani sailors, Mohammed al Qasmi, Khalid al Sarihi and Khamis al Mashaikhi, successfully advanced to the Gold Fleet after delivering exceptional performances throughout the preliminary rounds.
Their results reflect the growing strength of Oman’s youth sailing programmes and the nation’s commitment to developing world-class sailors.
IODA PRAISES GROWTH, ORGANISERS
Speaking to the media, Susan Elliot, Ioda Race Coordinator, praised the impressive organisation and regional development of sailing. “Over the past decade, we have witnessed a remarkable resurgence in the performance of Asian and Oceanian sailors internationally, largely due to increased investment in youth sailing and Optimist training programmes. Hosting championships like this one plays a vital role in inspiring the next generation of sailors.”
She added that hosting large-scale events presents logistical challenges from accommodation and transport to smooth race operations, but noted that Oman Sail has excelled in delivering both professionalism and genuine Omani hospitality. “Visiting Oman is always a special experience. Barcelo Musannah Resort provides the perfect venue for an event of this scale and the dedication of the organising team has ensured that every detail, on and off the water, is handled with precision and care.”
SAFETY TAKES PRIORITY
Mohammed al Balushi, the event’s Safety Officer, emphasised that safety remains the top priority throughout the competition. “The Royal Oman Police Coast Guard is stationed nearby, supported by divers, lifeguards and a fully equipped medical team ready for any emergency.”
"We also monitor every boat through a digital tracking system to ensure full supervision and swift response at all times,” he added.
On Thursday, the championship will feature the Team Racing events, where the best-performing national teams will compete head-to-head before the fleet finals begin later this week. With top young sailors advancing into the Gold, Silver and Bronze fleets, spectators can expect thrilling duels and exceptional displays of skill as the road to the continental titles continues.
