MUSCAT: Two theatrical texts by Omani writers Yasser al Balushi and Dr Wafa al Shamsi have been shortlisted for the 17th Children’s Theatrical Text Writing Competition, organised by the Arab Theatre Authority.
This year’s competition was held under the artistic and humanitarian theme 'Our Children: New Heroes in Our Folktales', aimed at revitalising classical Arabic tales and freeing them from negative imagery, while reconnecting younger generations with their cultural heritage and preparing them for the future, according to a press release issued by the Authority.
The 2025 edition witnessed strong participation, receiving 217 theatrical scripts from across the Arab world, of which 200 met the entry requirements. Following a rigorous review process, 20 scripts were shortlisted, representing a distinguished selection of creative works in children’s playwriting from Oman, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Libya.
Ismail Abdullah, Secretary-General of the Arab Theatre Authority, expressed appreciation for all the submissions, noting that the competition highlights the importance of addressing educational and cultural themes that strengthen children’s sense of belonging and pride in their Arab identity.
He added that the Authority continues to expand the scope of children’s play-writing and is working to enhance the global presence of Arabic theatrical texts through initiatives and programmes focused on nurturing the creativity of children and youth — the makers of the future and the spirit of Arab culture.
The competition remains one of the Arab Theatre Authority’s most prominent initiatives, supporting Arab writers and encouraging the creation of theatrical works that inspire children with educational and aesthetic awareness, while instilling the values of goodness, beauty and belonging. - ONA
