In line with its steadfast commitment to empowering women and strengthening their participation in national development, the Sultanate of Oman continues to advance policies that promote a fair and supportive work environment. These policies are designed to help women excel in their professional roles while fulfilling their family responsibilities — reflecting the country’s vision of equality, balance, and social justice.
Oman’s approach to gender equality is rooted in a comprehensive legal framework that ensures women’s rights in the workplace. One of the most notable of these is the maternity leave entitlement of 98 fully paid days, which stands among the most generous in the region. This period can begin before or after childbirth, depending on the mother’s choice — allowing her to manage both personal and professional commitments with greater ease.
Understanding that motherhood requires continued care beyond childbirth, Omani law allows female employees to request an additional unpaid leave of up to 98 days, subject to the employer’s approval and continued social insurance contributions. This ensures job security and social protection even during extended periods of absence.
An outstanding feature of Oman’s social protection framework is its continuity of maternity benefits. If a woman changes her workplace during her maternity leave, she retains the right to continue her remaining leave with the new employer. This progressive policy ensures that motherhood does not become a barrier to professional mobility or job stability.
Oman’s labour laws also recognise the role of fathers in early childcare. Male employees are entitled to seven days of paid paternity leave, which can be taken within 98 days from the date of childbirth. This provision promotes shared parenting, reduces pressure on mothers, and strengthens family cohesion.
In cases of maternal death during childbirth, the father inherits the remaining maternity leave to care for the newborn. This compassionate measure demonstrates Oman’s human-centred legislative approach and its dedication to preserving family welfare in all circumstances.
Women in Oman enjoy strong employment security during pregnancy and maternity leave. Employers are prohibited from terminating or penalising female employees due to maternity-related reasons. Even if a woman’s employment contract ends during her pregnancy, she continues to receive maternity benefits under the social protection system — a testament to the country’s commitment to long-term welfare and gender equality.
These initiatives reflect Oman’s forward-looking vision that empowering women is not merely a social goal, but an economic and national investment. Omani women play a central role in shaping the country’s progress, excelling in sectors such as education, healthcare, management, research and entrepreneurship.
