BARKA, OCT 23

The preliminary endurance race kicked off on Thursday morning in the Wilayat of Barka, organised by the Oman Equestrian Federation (OEF), bringing together a wide array of riders from local stables in an atmosphere filled with excitement and determination. The event is part of the OEF's strategic plan to hone riders’ skills and prepare them for regional and international competitions, notably the 2026 World Endurance Championship scheduled in Al Ula, Saudi Arabia, for which many Omani riders are aiming to qualify.

Rider Hamida al Sudairy shared, “my introduction to endurance riding started with simple training sessions to understand the nature of the sport. My first race was full of challenges and since then I have considered every competition as a new opportunity to learn something different.”

Al Sudairy added, “what draws me most to endurance races is the deep bond formed with the horse over long distances, where each step requires mutual trust and understanding without words. Night races demand high focus, as visibility is limited and the rider relies heavily on the horse’s instincts. The biggest challenge is maintaining the right pace without exhausting the horse. Every preliminary race brings me closer to my dream of competing internationally and representing Oman at its best.”

He also commented on the development of endurance riding in Oman. “We have witnessed clear progress in race organisation, rider performance and participation numbers, with increasing interest from young people and strong support from relevant authorities. This growth reflects a rising awareness of the significance of equestrian sports as part of Omani heritage.”

Regarding balancing daily life with training, Al Sudairy said: “It requires organisation and discipline. My work as an engineer demands concentration, yet I dedicate fixed time to training regardless of circumstances, training is not just preparation for races; it is a time for me to recharge and find personal balance.”

Rider Mohammed al Hosni expressed satisfaction with the preparations. “We feel confident after the final preparation stage and the track modifications added more challenge to the race. My goal is to achieve international success that raises Oman’s flag and each preliminary race is a step towards that dream.”

Trainer Hafs al Sinani, who inherited his love for horses from his father, Salim al Sinani, emphasised that the race provides a valuable opportunity to test both horses and riders. “We are working to prepare a generation capable of competing internationally through comprehensive training programmes that consider both technical and mental aspects.”

Additionally, renowned Omani trainer Said bin Salim al Balushi praised the level of young riders, saying, “what we are witnessing today is the result of years of consistent work. Preliminary races like these lay the foundation for building future champions.”

The event concluded amid enthusiastic crowds and vibrant public engagement, reflecting the growing prominence of equestrian sports in Oman and solidifying the nation’s strong presence in regional and international endurance competitions.
