The Ministry of Education (MoE), represented by the Oman School Sports Association (OSSA), in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth (MoCSY), inaugurated the School Athletes Development Centres Project during a ceremony held at the Oman Olympic Academy’s lecture hall on Tuesday.
The event was held under the auspices of Basil bin Ahmed al Rawas, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth for Sports and Youth and attended by Dr Abdullah bin Khamis Ambusaidi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Education for Education, and OSSA Chairman, along with association heads, sports officials and project supervisors.
In his address, Jaber bin Mohammed al Shabibi, Director of the Athletes Development System at MoCSY, stated that this ambitious national project reflects the integration of efforts between the two ministries to build a promising generation of Omani athletes and expand the base of sports participation in schools, emphasised that the project provides an environment for discovering and developing young talents through scientific training methods led by qualified national coaches.
Al Shabibi highlighted that the next phase focuses on on field implementation and continuous evaluation to ensure the centres’ effectiveness, calling on coaches and supervisors to dedicate their efforts to making the initiative a cornerstone for Oman’s sporting future.
Meanwhile, Hisham bin Salem al Adwani, OSSA Vice-Chairman, affirmed that the project comes in line with the directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to nurture sports talents and create a sustainable pathway for their development. The centres will help identify and train young athletes under the supervision of school sports specialists, forming a direct pipeline to clubs and national teams.
The event featured a visual presentation outlining the objectives and scope of the initiative, followed by a briefing from Yousef bin Fadhl Bait Saleem, OSSA Board Member, who explained that the project will launch 10 training centres across Oman, targeting 250 students in four disciplines: handball, athletics, hockey and basketball.
The ceremony concluded with a memento presented by Dr Abdullah bin Khamis Ambusaidi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Education for Education to Basil bin Ahmed al Rawas, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth for Sports and Youth in recognition of his patronage and support for the project.
