MUSCAT: The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP), in collaboration with Imtiaz Development and Investment Company, has launched a two-day workshop titled “Quality and Standardisation: From Concept to National Impact” at the Ministry’s headquarters.

The event brought together specialists, experts and representatives from government, private and academic sectors, as well as entrepreneurs and small and medium enterprises (SMEs), to discuss how quality and standardisation can drive national competitiveness and innovation.

Imad bin Khamis al Shukaili, Director General of Standards and Metrology at MoCIIP, said the Ministry is developing a national strategy for quality and standardisation to act as a road map towards a knowledge-based, competitive economy built on quality and innovation.

He explained that the strategy aims to strengthen institutional frameworks, enhance the competitiveness of Omani products, support exports and import substitution; and empower national talent to lead transformation in this vital sector.

Al Shukaili stressed the Ministry’s goal of embedding a culture of quality and standardisation across all sectors, saying that “quality must become a way of life and standardisation a language of progress”, helping elevate Oman’s global standing.

The workshop featured interactive sessions and practical exercises exploring the pillars of quality infrastructure — including specifications, metrology, accreditation, conformity and market surveillance. It also tackled misconceptions about quality and highlighted how standards directly impact public health, safety and consumer trust.

Participants reviewed international case studies where quality-driven approaches delivered measurable economic and developmental outcomes, followed by open discussions to share insights and experiences.

The second day of the workshop will focus on the link between standardisation and sustainable development, the role of standards in supporting SMEs, ensuring product safety in the Omani market and boosting the competitiveness of national products in regional and global markets.

The event forms part of the Ministry’s wider efforts to enhance Oman’s quality and standardisation system, a key pillar in strengthening economic competitiveness and improving the business environment. — ONA
