MUSCAT: Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) has been ranked eighth among Arab universities in the QS World University Rankings 2026, as announced during the closing ceremony of the QS Arab Forum 2025, hosted for the first time in the Sultanate of Oman.
The forum brought together higher education experts, Arab university presidents, academics, researchers and decision-makers in the field of higher education.
Dr Rahma bint Ibrahim al Mahrouqiyah, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, who hosted the event, praised the inclusion of 11 Omani universities in this year’s rankings — marking a 175 per cent increase in the number of Omani institutions since 2020.
She emphasised Oman’s growing reputation as a regional hub for collaborative research and higher education partnerships that promote excellence, sustainability, and innovation.
As of this year, 298 Arab universities are registered in the QS rankings, including 82 new entrants, among them 11 Omani institutions — with four new additions this year.
The QS Arab Forum highlighted the results of the 2026 rankings and addressed key themes such as academic innovation, education quality, international partnerships, scientific research and academic reputation. Sessions also explored emerging trends including hybrid learning and technology integration in higher education.
The conference provided a platform for participants to exchange experiences, develop new collaborations, and enhance the academic and administrative performance of Arab universities, contributing to their global standing. — ONA
