SUHAR: In a move that strengthens Oman’s food security and supports rural livestock breeders, the Department of Animal Wealth at the General-Directorate of Agricultural, Fisheries and Water Resources in Al Batinah North recently launched a mobile veterinary clinic to provide medical and advisory services in several mountain villages of Suhar, including Sham, Hibi, Katm, Al Hijal and Hilal Bani Issa.
The initiative aims to reach remote communities with essential veterinary care, promoting the health and productivity of local livestock which is a cornerstone of Oman’s food sustainability efforts. During the recent visit, the mobile clinic treated more than 300 heads of livestock, addressing common diseases and providing guidance on proper breeding practices such as hoof trimming and parasite control.
The team also conducted hands-on training for breeders on electronic registration in the national vaccination project, a key step towards improving disease monitoring and livestock management across Oman.
“The mobile clinic is a great initiative that makes us feel connected and supported and it is happening for the first time,” said Khalid al Maktoomi, a livestock breeder from Hibi village. “For many of us living in the mountains, it’s difficult to access veterinary services regularly. The team not only treated our animals, but also taught us valuable techniques to keep them healthy. It shows that the government truly values our role in supporting national food security.”
Officials emphasised that such field initiatives reflect the ministry’s ongoing efforts to empower rural breeders and reduce economic losses caused by preventable animal diseases. The mobile veterinary service is expected to continue visiting more remote areas in the coming months, ensuring that no breeder is left behind in the mission to safeguard Oman’s livestock wealth and strengthen the nation’s food security.
