Muscat, Oct 10
The Girls’ Football League kicked off, organised by the Oman Football Association (OFA) represented by the Women’s Committee, in cooperation with Oman Refco Company, with the participation of nine teams from academies, private and public schools; and community teams.
The competition features two age categories, under 13 to 16 years and Open Age; and comes as part of the celebration of Omani Women’s Day, reflecting the OFA’s efforts to promote girls’ participation in sports and develop women’s football in the Sultanate of Oman. The matches are being played at Goal One pitches in Al Athaiba, amidst enthusiastic and competitive atmospheres and the league will conclude on October 16.
Hajar al Maziniyah, OFA Board Member and Chair of the Women’s Committee, stated that the organisation of this league comes within the committee’s plan to support and develop women’s football in Oman by providing a safe and motivating sports environment that enables girls to practice the game regularly. She added that this league is one of the key events organised by the Women’s Committee this year, coinciding with Omani Women’s Day, which celebrates the role and status of women in various fields, including sports.
Al Maziniyah explained that the league aims to expand the practice of football among girls across the Sultanate of Oman and to encourage families to support their daughters’ participation in sports activities, given the physical, psychological and social benefits they provide. She added that the competition also helps to develop leadership, teamwork and responsibility skills, noting that the league serves as a model for community sports events that create a healthy and safe environment for girls and families, while encouraging sports to become a way of life.
FUTURE PLANS
Al Maziniyah emphasised that the Women’s Committee is working on sustainable development programmes aimed at discovering and nurturing young talents through local championships, training courses and workshops in preparation for supplying national teams with promising players capable of representing Oman in regional and international tournaments.
She concluded by noting that the committee plans to relaunch the Girls’ Futsal League in the coming period, following the great success of its previous editions, affirming that the OFA will continue its strong support for all initiatives that contribute to the advancement of women’s football and strengthening the presence of women in the Omani sports arena.
