MUSCAT: Oman national football team will eye a strong start in their opening match against Qatar on Wednesday in the AFC Asian Qualifiers – Road to 26 Playoffs Group A clash. The decisive encounter will start at 7 pm (Oman time) at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium.
Red Warriors are fully aware that securing an opening victory against hosts Qatar will boost confidence and morale high ahead of their second match against the United Arab Emirates on Saturday and raise the chances of snatching the only one automatic qualification spot in the group to advance into next year’s global showpiece.
Oman head coach Carlos Queiroz voiced confidence in his team’s readiness and spirit during the official pre-match press conference. “We are fully prepared, highly motivated, and in the best shape to achieve a positive result and move closer to qualification,” said the Portuguese tactician.
“The players are committed to showcasing their best, playing with high spirit and one goal in mind, no matter the challenges ahead. I know the Qatar team very well, and we will focus on the small details to achieve the desired result.”
The vastly experienced coach, who took charge of Oman in July 2024, emphasised that focus and unity would be decisive. “Our players are strong and fully aware of the importance of this stage. Every team has its strengths and weaknesses. Our job is to remain focused and avoid mistakes. Pressure is part of football, but this group knows how to turn pressure into power,” he said.
Queiroz, who previously led several national teams at World Cups, described coaching Oman as an honour. “It is a privilege to coach this team. My message to our fans is simple to trust your players. They do not only play football as they play with their hearts and the soul of true Omanis. We fight for one country, one flag, and for the people of Oman,” he concluded.
READY FOR CHALLENGE
Oman’s campaign for a maiden Fifa World Cup qualification will rely on a group of players with experience and youthful energy. Among the key players expected to make an impact including Essam al Subhi, who has scored three goals in his last four appearances, Ali al Busaidy, Mohsin al Ghassani, Khalid al Buraiki and Jameel al Yahmadi, alongside rising talents Musab al Shaqsi, Abdulrahman al Mushaifri, Ghanim al Habshi and Ahed al Mashakehi.
Team captain Ali al Busaidy echoed his coach’s determination. “Our goal since the start of the qualifiers has been to reach the World Cup. We are entering a decisive stage, and we are ready for the challenge. The pressure is natural, but we’re confident, focused and united for Oman.”
On the other side, Qatar head coach Julen Lopetegui praised Oman’s recent progress and tactical organisation. “We are facing a strong opponent with talented players who beat us in the Gulf Cup,” the Spaniard said. “Our preparation has been intense and disciplined. We understand the responsibility we carry and will fight collectively to make our fans proud.”
Since taking charge in May, Lopetegui’s side has shown mixed form with one win in four matches including defeats to Lebanon (1-0) and Russia (4-1) and a 2-2 draw against Bahrain. Despite this, Qatar will rely on star striker Almoez Ali and playmaker Akram Afif to spark their attacking abilities.
