Muscat: The Oman Meteorology Office said the tropical system 'Shakhti' has intensified into a Category 1 tropical cyclone over the northwestern Arabian Sea, about 330 kilometres away from the Sultanate of Oman’s coast, with maximum wind speeds around the centre ranging between 64 and 70 knots.

"The latest forecasts indicate that the tropical cyclone (Shakti) will continue to move southwestward towards the coasts of South Al Sharqiyah Governorate, and it will begin to gradually weaken over the next 12 hours. The path of the tropical cyclone is expected to begin to gradually deviate eastward, returning to the center of the Arabian Sea, starting tonight and tomorrow morning, Monday, away from the coasts of the Sultanate of Oman. The closest point to the center of the tropical cyclone will be from the coasts of the Sultanate of Oman before deviating by approximately 100 to 200 km.

At 34-64 knots, there will be possible indirect impacts on the Sultanate of Oman over the next two days (Sunday - Tuesday)

Sea waves will rise on all coasts of the Sultanate of Oman 2-4 meters, with chances of sea water extending over low-lying coastal areas and wadis, and Scattered rainfall of varying intensity (10-30 mm).

The affected governorates are South Al Sharqiyah and Al Wusta coasts.

The Oman Met noted a low probability of further intensification at this stage.

The centre was located at latitude 21.06°N and longitude 62.43°E.
