BARCELONA: The Sultanate of Oman took part in the Unesco World Conference on Cultural Policies and Sustainable Development (Mondiacult 2025), being held in Barcelona, Spain. The conference concluded on October 1.
The Omani delegation was headed by Sayyid Said bin Sultan al Busaidy, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth for Culture, with the participation of Amina bint Salem al Balushiyah, Oman’s Permanent Representative to Unesco.
The conference focused on the cultural dimension of the post-2030 sustainable development agenda. It also addressed priority issues including culture as a human right, culture and education, the cultural economy and decent work, cultural heritage and climate change, culture for peace, digital transformation, artificial intelligence and culture, and the role of cultural data and research.
Mondiacult is one of Unesco’s most significant high-level platforms for intergovernmental dialogue on cultural policy. The gathering provides ministers, policymakers and cultural leaders with an opportunity to chart the future of culture’s role in development, peace-building, and human rights. It aims to help member states adapt their cultural policies to global challenges such as climate change, technological access, and crisis recovery.
By participating, Oman reaffirmed its belief in culture as a public good and as an essential pillar of social and economic progress. The conference also provided the Sultanate with an opportunity to highlight its achievements in cultural heritage preservation, creative industries, and the promotion of intercultural dialogue. Mondiacult 2025 is expected to adopt recommendations that will shape international cultural cooperation and strengthen the global cultural sector in the years ahead. — ONA
