MUSCAT: In a clear demonstration of its commitment to accelerating digital transformation, the Governorate of Al Sharqiyah South held a meeting of its Supervisory Team for Digital Transformation, chaired remotely by Dr Yahya bin Badr al Maawali, Governor of Al Sharqiyah South. The session reviewed the achievements of the governorate’s Digital Transformation Plan (2023–2025) and endorsed the framework for the next phase (2026–2030).
This strategic step aligns with the national priorities of Oman Vision 2040, which positions digital transformation at the heart of Oman’s future, aiming to build an agile digital government and a knowledge-based economy powered by technology and innovation.
During the meeting, Abdullah bin Saif al Oraimi, Head of the Digital Transformation Team at the Governorate, presented a comprehensive report highlighting key achievements across various domains. These included strengthening governance and information security, advancing initiatives in digitising the blue economy, and expanding work in infrastructure development and automation.
The presentation also underscored progress in enhancing digital platforms and raising user satisfaction levels with public services. According to Al Oraimi, the first phase of the plan marked a turning point in reshaping the way government services are delivered, both locally and nationally, while ensuring that initiatives are aligned with the broader national digital transformation agenda.
The discussions also paved the way for the next ambitious phase (2026–2030). Building on previous accomplishments, the upcoming plan will focus heavily on innovation and the adoption of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things, and smart solutions across public services, mobility and community development.
Key proposed initiatives for this phase include further digitisation of critical economic sectors, particularly fisheries and tourism — two pillars of Al Sharqiyah South’s economy. Expanding the scope of e-government services to cater to all segments of society is also a top priority, with the goal of improving the overall quality of life for citizens and residents alike.
Participants reaffirmed that digital transformation is no longer a complementary option but a strategic imperative to realise Oman Vision 2040’s priorities. By promoting good governance, simplifying processes and leveraging technology to boost institutional performance, digital transformation is set to drive sustainable growth and modernise public administration.
Equally emphasised was the need for broad community engagement, as well as active participation from the private sector and academia in shaping and implementing digital programmes. With its rich economic, human and cultural resources, Al Sharqiyah South was described as well-positioned to serve as a national model for digital transformation, particularly in areas like the blue economy and sustainable tourism.
In his closing remarks, Al Maawali stressed that the governorate’s digital transformation journey is about shaping the future and ensuring that development remains sustainable and citizen-focused. He underlined that digital transformation is not an end in itself, but rather a tool to deliver progress, improve service quality and strengthen Al Sharqiyah South’s role as a vital contributor to the national economy.
