Omani runners are increasingly making their mark on the global stage, promoting the Sultanate of Oman through their participation and achievements in various international and local running events.
This growing presence highlights Oman's natural beauty and cultural heritage, while also fostering a vibrant sports culture within the country.
Recent successes include the Bosnia Marathon 2025, where Omani athletes Hamed al Mahrouqi and Abdullah al Numani, successfully finished 21 km half marathon in Bosnia. Their aim was to promote Oman while representing Muscat Road Runners. They started their running career in 2010.
Hamed did 80 half marathons, nine full marathons and four ultra marathons in different parts of the world.
For Al Mahrouqi taking part in various marathons around the world means promoting Oman. "I feel proud when I see myself at such events. It makes me feel fit while doing my small bit to tell the world about Oman," he said.
Al Numani, 50, who has participated in different marathons in various countries, said: "I always participate in international events whenever I can. I am doing my part to promote my country Oman."
"Also, the marathon is not really about winning, it’s about fitness. Toeing the starting line of a marathon, regardless of the language we speak, or the colour of your skin, we all stand as equal. Perhaps the world would be a better place if more people run," Al Numani added.
Oman itself hosts significant running events that attract international participants, further showcasing its diverse landscapes. The Himam Trail Run Race, for instance, has become the largest event of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region, with over 4,000 competitors from 65 countries.
Similarly, the International Mountain Running Challenge, organised by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MoHT), highlights Oman's mountainous terrains and aims to rejuvenate tourism.
These events, featuring various race categories for all ages, underscore the strong passion for physical activity in the community and aim to build a generation of athletes capable of representing Oman internationally.
