SALALAH: The Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI) concluded its 13th session in Salalah, hosted by the Sultanate of Oman through the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources. The meeting produced a series of recommendations and resolutions to strengthen the sustainability of the fisheries and aquaculture sectors across the region.

Among the key outcomes were the development of a new regional website to serve as a database and information hub for member states, and the integration of climate change considerations into national aquaculture programmes and plans.

The commission also recommended establishing national liaison points to combat illegal fishing, updating research templates for priority species and enhancing participation in the regional scientific review expert team.

The session further called for greater institutional cooperation between regional and international organisations to safeguard fish resources.

In recognition of his contributions to advancing the marine fisheries sector, Dr Abdulaziz bin Said al Marzouqi, Director-General of Fisheries Resources Development at Oman’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, was elected as the new RECOFI Chairman. — ONA
