Muscat: The World Cancer Congress Summit is set to take place in Muscat during the first week of November.

Dr Wahid al Kharousi, Chairman of the OCA, stated, “Our region is part of the global south, and we have to be self-reliant and able to pay for our own medication. We must be resilient. The important part comes after the conference. Research is crucial and something we must continue to pursue.” The four-day event will focus on the community and explore ways to control cancer, according to Dr Zahid al Mandhari, a board member of OCA. Dr Manal al Zadjali, Secretary-General of OCA, mentioned that the event will primarily focus on the community at large.

“We will start on November 3 with community awareness, and from November 4 to 6, the events will be aimed at doctors and healthcare workers.” Dr Mohammed al Lamki, a board member of OCA, said, “The whole idea of the congress is to bring the three groups together — the doctors, the community and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) — to develop the Muscat Resolution that will empower people affected by cancer. We are also looking into introducing various tools for better communication and care for those affected by cancer, such as patient navigation.”

The congress aims to explore cutting-edge advancements in cancer care, foster global collaboration and enhance public awareness to address one of the world’s most pressing health challenges. The congress serves as a strategic platform to unite global efforts, focusing on prevention, capacity building, patient empowerment and scientific research to drive tangible progress towards a healthier, more sustainable future.

The event is expected to have a diverse group of professionals and stakeholders, ensuring its inclusivity and global impact. Attendees include oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, nurses, general practitioners, palliative care specialists, researchers, academics, policymakers, international organisations, civil society groups, cancer survivors, caregivers, and industry representatives from pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, health technologies, artificial intelligence and healthcare financing.
