Standardisation bodies around the world play a significant and vital role in developing local economies and protecting consumers from any risks related to the use of products and the services.
The importance of standardisation bodies lies in meeting specific product standards in terms of quality, safety and efficiency; and helping companies reduce health or environmental risks resulting from non-conforming products. These bodies also remove technical barriers to global trade and help facilitate trade between countries through standardisation. They also encourage innovation and industrial development, providing the technical foundations that help companies improve their products and services, thus enhancing competitiveness. These bodies also help support sustainability and environmental protection by providing standard specifications that include requirements related to environmental sustainability and energy efficiency. They facilitate industrial and technological integration through standardisation so that different products and components can integrate and operate together easily.
The GCC Standardisation Organisation plays a major role in providing these requirements and standards for products arriving in the Gulf states. This organisation is a regional body established to promote cooperation and has numerous roles in carrying out these activities. It works to establish unified specifications for products and services that are applied across all GCC states. It also coordinates between national standardisation bodies in each member state to achieve integration and unification of efforts. It also supports the safety of goods and products in the Gulf market by issuing technical regulations that specify the basic requirements that products must meet before they enter the markets. These measures facilitate intra- and regional trade and support efforts to unify specifications and the movement of goods between GCC states without the need for additional inspection or testing. It also enhances technical and scientific capabilities in the field of standardisation by providing training for employees in these institutions and exchanging expertise among them, which helps develop specialised Gulf technical cadres in these fields.
The GCC Standardisation Organisation also encourages mutual recognition of conformity certificates among GCC states, which reduces costs and increases efficiency. Recently, a delegation from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, represented by the General Directorate of Standards and Metrology, participated in the meetings of the Gulf Standardisation Strategies Team in Riyadh. The meeting discussed the GSO's strategic plan (2026–2030) and related performance indicators. The goal is to keep pace with rapid economic and technological changes and contribute to the development of an integrated Gulf quality infrastructure system.
Today, there are several economic challenges resulting from global technological transformations, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence, smart cities and innovation. This requires unifying Gulf efforts to develop standard specifications, ensure the quality of products and services in these vital sectors; and unify visions and policies related to standardisation among member states.
Officials at the General Organisation for Standardisation (GOSI) indicate that work is underway to achieve these strategic objectives. A number of initiatives have been developed, which are considered a key lever to enable the organisation to address challenges and bridge the gaps between the current situation and strategic aspirations. This will reduce obstacles and achieve a sustainable impact on national standardisation bodies and the Gulf industrial sector.
In conclusion, standardisation is not merely a technical procedure; it is an essential element in building a strong, secure and integrated economy. This is why the Gulf Standardisation Organisation (GSO) plays a strategic role in unifying efforts and standards among GCC countries to achieve economic integration, protect consumers and promote sustainable development.
