Love conquers all — but what happens when the faces, voices and cherished memories of loved ones fade away? Alzheimer’s and dementia strip individuals of their connections to the past, leaving them adrift in blurred images and fading familiarity.
According to a Ministry of Health report, Alzheimer’s and dementia are emerging health concerns in Oman. While incidence rates may appear lower than in some countries, improved diagnostic capabilities have revealed a steady increase.
The annual incidence of Alzheimer’s among those over 60 is estimated at 1.5 per 1,000 person-years, with prevalence rising sharply with age. In 2020, dementia accounted for 2.18 per cent of all deaths in Oman.
Founded in 2013 by Dr Hamed al Sinawi, the Oman Alzheimer’s Society (OAS) continues to provide support, raise awareness and advocate for dementia care. Its Dementia Friends Programme aims to educate the public and foster understanding.
Regular symposia, webinars and initiatives such as the World Alzheimer’s Month Symposium and The Purple Café have been instrumental in building awareness.
Health experts stress the importance of early detection, though symptoms often appear only after significant brain damage. Dr Saleha al Jadidi, Consultant Psychiatrist, notes that rising figures are also linked to better diagnostic skills among Omani physicians.
“Early detection of Alzheimer’s in Oman can be challenging, as significant brain damage may have already occurred by the time symptoms become noticeable,” says Dr Saleha.
As part of ongoing awareness efforts, the Oman Geriatric Society, in collaboration with the Higher Institute of Health Specialities, will dedicate September 18 as a special day for patients, caregivers and families — a step towards inclusive education and participation in dementia care. Advocates emphasise that support for patients should include maintaining communication, even with non-verbal individuals, and engaging them in daily activities like walks or beach visits. Practical home safety measures, such as installing handrails, are also recommended to reduce risks..
