MUSCAT, SEPT 8

In a cultural gathering that bridges history and intellectual heritage, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, represented by the Literary Forum, on Tuesday inaugurated a two-day scientific symposium titled 'Readings in the Thought of Shaikh Sulaiman bin Nasser al Lamki'.

The event was held at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque Hall, under the auspices of Dr Shaikh Kahlan bin Nabhan al Kharousi, Assistant Grand Mufti of the Sultanate of Oman. The symposium aims to shed light on the multifaceted life and intellectual contributions of Shaikh Al Lamki, one of Oman’s most prominent scholars of the early 20th century. A group of distinguished researchers is presenting papers that explore his upbringing, academic journey and the historical role he played in Omani society.

Commenting on the significance of the event, Nasser bin Salim al Sawafi, Assistant Director-General at the Literary Forum, said that the symposium comes within the framework of a comprehensive research and documentation project titled “Readings in the Thought of Scholars.” He added: “Shaikh Suleiman al Lamki was a distinguished figure in early 20th-century Oman. Born in 1862 in the Village of Al Dhahir in Al Rustaq, he grew up in a family known for its knowledge and leadership. History has recorded many of his contributions and positions, and through this symposium, we aspire to highlight his legacy and compile it into a publication that preserves his heritage for future generations.”

He noted: “Reviving the legacies of Omani scholars and thinkers demonstrates the depth and richness of Omani civilisation. It also introduces the younger generations to their nation’s history, strengthening their sense of identity and belonging. This effort aligns with the ministry’s cultural strategy, which is rooted in the values of citizenship and authentic identity, and resonates with the ambitious Oman Vision 2040, led by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik.”

Shaikh Sulaiman al Lamki is remembered as a man who combined scholarship with leadership, leaving a mark on both intellectual and social life. The symposium highlights his role in shaping thought, guiding society, and enriching the cultural identity of Oman. Through the research presented, his contributions are revisited not only as a historical record but as a source of inspiration for the present and future.

In an emotional address on behalf of the family, Mohamed bin Ahmed al Lamki expressed deep appreciation to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth for its efforts to document and celebrate the life of his grandfather. He said: “We are honoured that Shaikh Suleiman’s legacy is being remembered in such an esteemed scholarly setting. This initiative ensures that his contributions will remain alive in the memory of generations to come.”

The symposium reflects Oman’s commitment to highlighting the achievements of its scholars, not only as part of the nation’s historical memory but also as a vital resource in shaping identity and promoting cultural presence at the regional and international levels.
