MUSCAT: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MoAFWR) has approved more than 21,000 date palm seedlings for plantation in an area of more than 200 acres over the past two seasons (2023-2024 and 2024-2025).

Over 100,000 fruit seedlings of various types and varieties have been distributed to eligible farmers in various governorates.

The ministry said that the establishment of model farms aims to achieve sustainable agricultural development, boost production, and enhance food security by disseminating modern agricultural technologies and introducing new and improved fruit and date palm varieties. It also supports farmers by providing technical guidance and advanced agricultural technologies to improve their income.

Eng Yahya bin Hamdan al Saadi, Head of the Horticultural Crops Department, MoAFWR, said that the ministry is making efforts to establish model fields for certain trees by providing advisory and technical services to farmers. He noted that the goal of the model farm programme is to enhance food security by achieving self-sufficiency for some targeted crops in commercial fields, supplying the market with high-quality date and fruit products and providing an additional source of income for farm owners. It also aims to provide farmers with the necessary skills and knowledge to manage and sustain their farms. — ONA
